Getting from one place to another is something many people take for granted. A quick trip to the shops, attending an appointment, meeting friends for coffee, or joining a community event can seem simple. However, for many people living with disability, access to reliable and accessible transport can be one of the biggest barriers to independence and community participation.
At QLSS, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to be part of their community, pursue their interests, and access the activities that matter most to them. That’s why we have recently expanded our transport options with the addition of a wheelchair-accessible bus fitted with a wheelchair hoist, helping more participants access safe, comfortable and inclusive transport throughout Townsville.
But accessible transport is about much more than getting from A to B. It can be the key to greater independence, stronger social connections, improved wellbeing, and increased confidence.
Why Community Access Matters
Community access is an important part of living a full and meaningful life.
Whether it’s attending appointments, participating in a hobby, visiting family and friends, joining social groups, or exploring local attractions, being actively involved in the community can have a significant impact on a person’s wellbeing and quality of life.
Many NDIS participants have goals that may involve: building social connections, increasing independence, developing life skills, trying new experiences, participating in recreational activities, or becoming more involved in their local community.
Community access supports help make these goals achievable by providing the assistance and transport needed to participate safely and confidently.
The Hidden Challenge of Transport
One of the most common barriers to community participation is transport.
For some participants, public transport may not be accessible or suitable for their individual needs. Others may require assistance boarding vehicles, travelling safely, or attending appointments and activities. Without reliable transport, opportunities can be missed.

Our New Wheelchair Accessible Bus
We’re excited to introduce our new wheelchair-accessible bus as part of our commitment to supporting greater community participation.
The bus features a wheelchair hoist, making it easier and safer for participants who use wheelchairs or mobility equipment to travel comfortably.
This allows us to support:
- Individual community access outings
- Small group activities
- Social and recreational programs
- Medical and allied health appointments
- Shopping trips
- Day excursions
- Community events
Most importantly, it means more participants can enjoy community experiences without worrying about transport limitations.

Townsville offers a wide variety of accessible and enjoyable destinations. Participants may choose to visit:
- The Strand
- Local markets
- Libraries
- Community centres
- Cafés and restaurants

- Sporting events
- Parks and recreation areas
Every participant’s interests are different, which is why community access should always be tailored to individual goals and preferences.
A trip to Pallarenda beach may be perfect for one participant, while another may enjoy visiting Cotters markets, attending a workshop, or joining a community group.
