Supported independent living (SIL) is a valuable service designed to assist individuals in maintaining their autonomy while ensuring they have the necessary support to manage daily tasks. It is one type of support to help you live in your home.
It includes help or supervision with daily tasks, like personal care or cooking meals. It helps you live as independently as possible, while building your skills.
Different types of home and living supports will suit different people. Supported independent living is only one of many support options available through the NDIS.

This kind of support can vary widely depending on individual needs but often includes:
Assistance with hygiene, grooming, and other personal care tasks.
Help with cooking or planning nutritious meals.
Support with cleaning, organizing, and maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment.
Regular check-ins or oversight to ensure safety and well-being.
Transport to doctors appointments or for grocery shopping and essentials
Training or guidance to develop skills that enhance independence, such as budgeting, shopping, and using public transportation.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is for people with higher support needs, who need some level of help at home all the time.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is best suited to people with a disability who have higher support needs. This means you need a significant amount of help throughout the day, 7 days a week and includes overnight support.
You can get Supported Independent Living (SIL) if you live with other NDIS participants. You can also get Supported Independent Living (SIL) if you live on your own. Alternatively, there might be other Home and Living Supports that suit you better.
There is more detailed information available on the NDIS website.
...without QLSS being the quality organisation, driving the transition forward and advocating for the client in times of crisis – I don’t think that we would be were we are today and the client certainly wouldn’t have made the level of progress they have.
