As we celebrate NAIDOC Week 2026, we reflect on the importance of connection, culture, and belonging for all Australians.
Recently, a group of First Nations participants supported by QLSS reached an important milestone. Many of these men live with very high support needs and experience significant barriers to community participation. For some, leaving their home is simply not possible.
Despite these challenges, they have now begun taking part in regular yarning sessions with community members who are willing to listen, share stories, and build genuine connections.
What might seem like a simple conversation is so much more. These sessions create opportunities for cultural connection, social inclusion, and meaningful relationships. They help ensure that community can still be accessible, even when someone cannot physically go out and engage with it themselves.
This achievement didn’t happen overnight. It has been the result of persistence, collaboration, and a shared commitment to finding person-centred solutions that break down barriers rather than accept them.
At QLSS, we believe everyone deserves opportunities to stay connected to culture, community, and the people around them. Seeing these conversations begin is a powerful reminder that with creativity and determination, meaningful outcomes are possible.
As NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we’re proud to support initiatives that strengthen connection, promote inclusion, and create opportunities for voices to be heard.
Because everyone deserves to belong, be heard, and stay connected to their community.
